At 5 years your child will want to explore the world, non-fiction books can be more detailed more and on a wider range of topics.

Picture books are still a great choice. Some kids will want chapter books with illustrations. Suspense becomes more interesting (though from an adult perspective the level of suspense they can take might seem still very tame.)
